Just before they left their home in Kentucky, they picked some wild berries for me!
Living here in the desert it is just hard to fathom that some places in the world actually have such a thing as "wild" (insert anything edible here). It's hard enough getting things to grow here on purpose, let alone having them just grow on your property of their own free will!
Mom and Kevin (youngest brother), picked the berries and froze them to make them travel easier. They have been in my freezer ever since.
Until last night!
(Wild Blueberries)
(Wild Blackberries)I've been trying to think about what I would like to make with them. I skimmed through quite a few recipes before finding this one.
(Berry Crumble Ala Mode)I absolutely loved it! However, I am discovering I am pretty much the only person in this household that likes "warm fruit". Dennis loves cobbler but that's about it. True enjoys some apple pie and Deni will eat any of it as long as it is smothered in ice cream. Sage is a no-go, save for the poached pears we made a few weeks ago. But even then she couldn't eat the whole thing.
Needless to say I was pretty bummed out they didn't rave about it.
I try not to eat too much sweets and I was counting on everyone to help finish off the HUGE casserole dish of it!
(Huge Casserole Dish of it)This morning I took the dish out of the fridge and began to scoop some into a dish for myself. I popped a piece into my mouth and was surprised at how different it was cold! I then called in my toughest critic (Sage) and MADE her try a bite. With not much enthusiasm (ok, she was pretty mad I was "making her" try it), she took the bite and chewed it slowly. I was waiting for her to make the face she does before she spits something out when to my surprise, she swallow it and asked for another bite!
So there we have it! It's not "cooked" fruit, it's "hot fruit" she doesn't like. I made them all come try it again in it's cold form and they all liked it! So it was promptly packed in small containers to take in lunches tomorrow, as to avoid exactly what I am doing right now. That would be wanting to go to the fridge to get myself a bowl of it!
There was a whole bag of leftover blackberries. I was going to just leave them frozen for a try at another recipe later on, but when I was pureeing some over-ripe pears for fruit leather, I thought they would make a nice flavor combined with the pears. They are in the dehydrator now. We'll see tomorrow how they turned out!
Thanks again Mom, Dad & Kevin! We really enjoyed our taste of Kentucky!

We have wild blackberries and huckleberries here and I jammed them and made a pie with the rest. It was delicious. Your crumble looked amazing.
I'm interested to see how the dehydration this works for you.
