A Rare Occurance

If you were to go by pictures alone, you would swear I only had two kids. True hates getting her picture taken. I suppose she takes after me...

But one evening I came home from work, and she was just sitting there looking particularly sweet, and I said "man I wish you would let me get some photos of you".

She raised her eyebrows at me with one of those "do we have to argue this again?" looks. Then I said "since you just had a Birthday...I'd really like to remember you like this before you get so big I can't remember you little at all".

And being as sentimental as her old lady, she smiled and said "ok mamma".

I didn't hesitate! We were packed and out the door within minutes!

By the time I drove across town to the place I had in my mind the sun was just where I wanted it for this delicious light.

It didn't take long before she was quite comfortable in front of the camera.

She even volunteered to lay on a tree!

She was such a great sport! And since she is my little nature girl, I thought the photos fit her perfectly.

Now if I can only get her in front of the camera enough times to fill up her space in the Christmas photo albums I give to the family...
I'd better go practice my guilt trips!

Playin' Catch up

We've been so busy livin' life we haven't had time to update. So let's play catch up!

Sage turned twelve in May. This was the first year of her life she didn't have a Birthday party. It was bittersweet. She chose to take her BFF out for a day of shopping. Of coarse she requested to stop at Starbucks along the way.

Then she had dinner at Sushi Masa

Sharing a strawberry frozen drink

Mmmm.... The Love Boat dinner....

Green tea ice cream for dessert.

Then she wrapped up the night with a movie. What better choice than "Prom" for it oozed with teenage fantasy.
I think she had a great time. One more year and we'll have a "teenager" on our hands. Weirdness. She's a great kid though.

I took some photos of her on her Birthday weekend to remember this time in her life. We found out just days before that she made first chair Viola in Orchestra. (Hence the viola.)

Then the following week she made the 7th grade drum position for Jazz Band. We are so proud of her. She's going to be a busy girl next year with all honors classes, Jazz Band practice an hour before school starts, Orchestra concerts, Beta Club meetings and what ever else we don't even know about yet. I've never seen her push herself this much. It will be a test for sure, but we have lots of confidence in her.

In the beginning of June, Ms. True celebrated her ninth Birthday with an Oriental themed party. The theme was perfect since she's been quite into all things Japanese lately. We had a pretty good turnout and she seemed really happy.
If you would like to see how it all played out go here. Some of the highlights of the party were hanging out and making art with her best buddies.

Being silly and making everyone giggle.

Opening up her present from Mazie, which required this cute googely-eyed mask that made her look like sloth from Goonies.

Then rummaging, while blindfolded, through a tub of rice to find her Birthday money.

And opening up her really cool rubber ducky collection.

How awesome for her to have friends who remember things like randomly wishing for rubber ducky collections...

And of coarse, dressing up. She said she felt like an Asian princess. And I thought she was just as beautiful as one.

She wasn't the only one looking spiffy that day either.

Lookin' good Sage!

The week before school ended, True completed her 3rd grade Chataqua. A Chataqua is where a student completes both a written and verbal report on a person, in this case, a famous historical figure that could be determined a hero. They are to dress up like the person and tell about their life in first person. Normally, the girls study famous female heroes and boys study the male ones. But True and her good friend Gracie talked their teacher into letting them be males. True had her heart set on being Walt Disney. She gave a good debate about why she was good for the part, explaining her love of drawing and animation in general, and her ambitions to one day become an animator.
Her teacher thought she proved her point well, and so the transformation into Walt Disney occurred.

True, being the great memorizer that she is, memorized her report with no problems. The day of the chataqua she did really well. Though her nerves did show through a little, she was able to make it all the way through with hardly a prompt or pause.

Aren't they eerily alike?!

Ms. Deni boo completed Kindergarten with flying colors. I don't know how I got so lucky with these smart kids, but I sure am thankful! The kid is reading chapter books and has a pretty good grasp of mathematics. I can attribute much of this to her wonderful teachers Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Hammons. Those two were heaven sent!
Deni's class put on a really cute end of the year show, but I accidentally erased the photos! So here is a cute one she posed for a couple weeks ago when I was playing with my camera.

So there you have it. There was much more, but this was the good stuff!

Thanks for reading!

Death of the Weed Whacker

Dearest Weed-whacker, you were the elite of great yard tools. For a plug-in model, you went above and beyond the call of duty, even out-lasting your previous ancestors of the 2-stroke generation. You never let anything get in your way, aside from the occasional shortness of extension cord, but that was never your fault. You battled some of the toughest weeds. From the stubborn crabgrass and the tallest fox tails, to the meanest desert bull-head thorns. You truly braved them all.
We will never forget the way we felt after a long battle, with you at our side. How are arms throbbed and our bodies ached from the tremulous power you held.
Your strength and persistence was much appreciated, and we couldn't have won all those battles without you.
Rest in Peace dear friend.

For now, we fall back and await reinforcements.
It's going to be tough replacing you, but the war continues, and so we must.

I surely hope the Mr. can find a replacement soon, before we are taken over.

Oh no! It's too late! The children are surrounded!
Send help fast!
May day! May day!

Worlds Longest Drawing

For family movie night, a couple weeks ago, we watched Ramona & Beezus with the girls. I was a huge Beverly Cleary fan in elementary school, and I was looking forward to (hopefully) turning the girls onto her books.
Unfortunately, who needs Ramona when you have the likes of Amber Brown, Junie B. Jones or even that Whimpy Kid with the diary?
But I'm not giving up. I plan to surprise them with a kindle soon. I will have the Ramona series pre-downloaded on it. Then I will do what any evil scheming mother who wants their way would do, and I will tell them that the machine doesn't allow you to download another book until the current one's are read.
Yup, I'm THAT evil! Bwhahaha!

They did get a cool idea from the movie though. They were just dying to make the "worlds longest drawing", just like Ramona and her dad did in the movie. Fortunately for them, there just so happened to be an extra day in our weekend, and they just so happen to have the worlds coolest artsy fartsy dad, whom was also dying to create the "world longest drawing".

Yeah, that's him *sigh* just makes me all googley-eyed watching him get down there on that hard floor to draw with them for, like, three hours straight!

Even Ms. Deni (who's been terribly ill with flu) got in on the action for a bit. But she only lasted about ten minutes, poor thing. They're going to wait to color it in until she feels better.
Now, the coolest thing about "the worlds longest drawing", besides all the super cool art skillz in action, is that it occupied everyone while I worked on baby shower stuff.
Thank you super artsy fartsy dad, those hours were much needed!

One of the fun things about having girls- hair personality.
Sage is at that age where she is having fun with hers. As long as she maintains good grades and a good attitude, we don't mind letting her explore self expression through a little lipstick and hair dye.
It's actually kind of a kick watching her have fun with her style. She's always had really thin, stringy hair. Short hair helps to disguise this problem. So really, coloring her hair is her only option for something different.
She can go a more natural shade of brown:

Or she can experiment with something darker:

Or like most recently, she can sport a dark red tint to go with her crazy lipstick and collection of hats.

Whatever she decides to do, it's always something fun and exciting!

True's hair has gotten quite long over last few years. Her hair grows faster than most people. I tell her it's because she's my healthiest eater, and the result of always eating her veggies.
She's got that sleek and shiny long hair most of us envy.
Whether it's pulled back in braids-

Or falling down her back-

Whatever she does with it, it usually looks pretty good.
Her only complaints of growing it out (her choice) is the part where she has to wash it. She really only needs to shampoo it every other day, so I got her a shower cap to help her out.
As you can see, she doesn't exactly like the shower cap either.

Miss Deni's hair is quite a lot of fun. By some weird genetic throw-back, we somehow got a curly-headed little girl.
It can be a lot of upkeep though. Unlike Sage and True, she can't really go one day without brushing hers out unless, of coarse, she's going for the dreadlocks look.
But the curly hair can be fun.
Curly hair is good for the compliments on almost every outing.

It's also good for mermaid hair.

Or the big poofy pom-pom pigtails.

Right now I'm at a loss of what to do with my own hair. I've had it short for over a year now, and it's time for a change. I've been dealing with these awkward in-between phases and it's driving me crazy! I'm not sure how long I can last before I take the scissors to my own head! I think I'm having a hair-identity crisis!

How about you? What is your hair-identity? Are you like Sage, and like to change it up often? Or like True, enjoying a grow-out after a few years of short hair? Or, are you like Deni, making the best of what you naturally have? Do you have any pointers for me? Should I wack it off again or just be patient and let it grow?
